Stations of the Cross

These images are from the Way of the Cross in the main church. Starting from the southeast corner, or the gospel side of the church the Way of the Cross may be followed. These stations were purchased from Cachal-Froc, which was a religious store in Paris in 1889 for $1,000. The medium of expression is Carton Pierre, scupltured in alto relievo.
Carton Pierre is a paper-pulp mixed with resin and glue, pressed into moulds and backed with sheets of glued paper. It was used for roofing, and is not the same as papier-mâché.
alto-relievo (sculpture) A form of sculpture in which carved figures or other objects protrude from the background.

Jesus has been scourged and crowned with thorns. and
1. Jesus is condemned to death.
condemned to die upon the cross.
2. Jesus accepts His cross.
Jesus is given a heavy cross to carry with His bleeding and battered body.
He takes His cross and with that He takes upon Himself all of our sins.
Weakened by all the beating, Jesus stumbles and falls. He continues on despite His pain to His crucifixion.
3. Jesus falls for the first time.
4. Jesus meets His mother.
Jesus struggles with His cross on His way to Calvary and meets His Mother. Grief stricken, she sees Her son suffering. Suffering for all our sins.
5. Simon helps carry the cross.
The persecution and the weight of the cross are making Jesus weaker. His executioners force Simon of Cyrene to help Him carry the cross.
6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.
Dripping sweat and blood, Jesus meets Veronica. She wipes His face with her veil and the image of His holy face is left on the cloth.
7. Jesus falls the second time.
Jesus falls again. He is dragged to His feet and forced to continue to His eventual crucifixion at Calvary.
8. Jesus speaks to the women.
Jesus sees the women of Jerusalem and they weep when they see Him. He says, " Weep not for me, but rather for your children."
9. Jesus fall the third time.
Jesus is exhausted and falls for a third time. His strength is waning and the guards try to make Him continue faster.
10. Jesus is stripped of His garments.
Jesus finally reaches Calvary, where He will be executed. He is stripped of His garments and the roughl action opens His wounds again.
11. Jesus is nailed to the cross.
His executioners nail His arms and feet to the cross.
For three hours Jesus is in agony, then He commends His spirit to His Father, lowers His head and succumbs to the torture.
12. Jesus dies upon the cross.
Jesus' body is removed from the cross by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. They carefully place Him in the arms of His mother.
13. Jesus is taken down from the cross.
1 4. Jesus is laid in the tomb.
Jesus' body is wrapped in a shroud and placed in a tomb. Then a large stone is rolled against the entrance.
